APRIL 24 - JUNE 7
OPENING RECEPTION: THURSDAY, APRIL 24, 7:30 PM
ARTISTāS PRESENTATION: THURSDAY, APRIL 24, 8:00 PM and
THURSDAY, MAY 8, 8:00 PM
In "Being in the World, 2 channels, a sound&image sculpture" Ginader creates a unique and innovative inter-arts experience. Sounds and images collected during his travels throughout Manitoba and Saskatchewan are Ginaderās raw materials and his art takes form through the conjunction of these diverse sources. Via simultaneous color projections of stills, video, and morphing images, viewers are presented with an ebb and flow through multiple levels of abstraction. At the same time they experience a wide time range of audio pulsations. The resulting installation asks viewers to expand their concepts of awareness and perception.
Dr. Gerhard Ginader is associate professor of composition and electronic music at Brandon University. His works for both traditional and new musical media have seen local, national and international performances. He conceives of sound art as a medium which, having both textural and spatial aspects, is a carrier in audio of an art form which lives somewhere between painting and sculpture. In the past he has worked on collaborative projects with visual artists. "Being in the World, 2 channels, a sound&image sculpture" is his first solo project in a venue traditionally designated for visual art.

IN MEMORY
Gerry Tillapauph
The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba and the Studio Program were sad to announce the passing of long time member and dedicated instructor, Gerry Tillapaugh, on February 22, 2003.Gerry had been part of the AGSM ceramic program for many years and contributed greatly to the development of ceramics in the Westman area and Canada as a whole. His ceramic career began in the 60s at SAIT in Calgary, were he underwent four years of ceramic study.
Upon graduation, Gerry taught clay at Red Deer Collage working with the handicapped, and then moved on to New Brunswick, where he studied and recorded clay deposits for the Provincial Government. It was from here that he traveled to Yellowknife as the Arts and Craft Liaison Officer for the Federal Government, bringing new and innovative ceramic knowledge to the North. Gerry finally moved back to the Westman region where he taught ceramic classes for the Carberry Arts Centre and the Brandon Allied Arts Center.
Throughout his career, Gerry opened and ran various ceramic studios, including Studio Pottery in Winnipeg and Kamloops, as well as Mostly Stoneware with John Wadell in Winnipeg in the 70s.
"You were an asset to the clay world and we will miss you dearly. Thanks, Gerry, for all youāve done."

EDUCATION & OUTREACH
ME AND YOU AND A DOG NAMED BOO
Looking for something to do this summer with your kids?
Why not join the outreach educator and the gallery dog in the Family Summer Loonie Art Extravaganza! I will be travelling around the southwest with art supplies, Nakoda, the wonder dog and some wild and wonderful art-making ideas this July and August! Arrangements regarding dates and times will be discussed with local arts organizations so stay tuned for more information!
Teacher professional development opportunities are also in the plans for the summer involving theme based workshops focusing on literacy and art techniques. Teachers can look forward to learning printmaking, photography, painting, drawing and ceramics.
CONTEMPORARY CRAFT
As part of their mandates, both the Manitoba Arts Network (MAN) and the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (AGSM) are concerned with the sharing of visual arts practices in Manitoba. This includes both the promotion of artistsā work and the sharing of ideas. Recognizing similar barriers in reaching this goal, a partnership was formed to create Manitoba Media: An Exhibition of Contemporary Craft.
The purpose of this project is to broaden the idea of what constitutes craft through the exhibition of work by artists who have pushed the boundaries of materials and techniques to a diverse audience, who may not necessarily get to galleries in urban areas.
Many arts organizations throughout the southwest have hosted the Manitoba Media exhibition, including the Dauphin Allied Arts Council, Manawaka Gallery in Neepawa and currently Leaf Rapids National Exhibition Centre for the months of April and May. You can look forward to seeing the exhibition at the Tiger Hills Arts Association in Holland during the month of July, as well as Virden Community Arts Council in December. The exhibitionās final destination will be at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba in January 2004. There are still some spaces available to arts organizations that are interested. Many of the artists are also eager to provide workshops to participating communities.

DIRECTORS NEWS
Itās amazing to discover that a six month interim assignment could turn into two and half years! On May 30, I will leave the AGSM and the many wonderful Brandonites who are strong supporters of the visual arts throughout Westman.
Looking back, itās been surreal. The Library-Arts Building on Princess Avenue is now a closed chapter of the AGSMās rich 97-year history. Though it served us extremely well, the old exhibition space was inadequate. There was little in the way of exhibition preparation space. Computers were too few and too old. Art School studios were in the windowless basement, limited in equipment and unconnected to the main activity of the Gallery.
Today we have been catipulted into an expanded facility with nearly everything one might want, for the ideal AGSM as we enter the 21st Century. With over $100,000 in new studio equipment, the Art School is fully functional. The Exhibition area is a showplace, and preparation spaces are excellent. Administratively, the facility is well-equipped and a pleasure to work in.
As I leave my interim position, I have only optimism for AGSMās future. Financial and administrative systems are stronger. The Board is rapidly moving toward a new governance model and has lead the organization into an era of both best business practice initiatives and entrepreneurial non-profit concepts that are at the leading edge of the arts industry. The AGSM has a greater community presence and is being noticed for its activities.
Artistically, the AGSM has become a leader among similar-sized communities in exhibiting diverse contemporary art forms. The Art School is moving toward greater offerings both in new disciplines and to new interest groups. The Outreach Program has moved beyond Gallery activity to regional workshops and professional support for our neighbouring Westman communities. Visitations has grown from 21,000 to 40,500 in just twelve months. Partnerships are being formed with school divisions, related provincial arts organizations, and with local community groups. AGSMās new world is unfolding rapidly.
And the future? As Dr. Jay Winburn stated, ćThe AGSM is at the dawning of a new era.ä Creativity and innovation are the driving forces in our new knowledge-based global society. The arts are the engine in the development of creative and inventive minds. The AGSM, in partnership with others, will lead in a transformation of Brandon and Westman as it becomes a larger centre for culture and innovation. The foundations are in place for the future AGSM÷an entrepeneurial spirit, a strong financial base, a cohesive Board, a new facility, an outward regional focus, evolving partnerships, a transformative capacity, and enormous positive energy!
Good luck, and good fellowship as we each move forward... and thank you for an enormous experience. It has been the opportunity of a lifetime.
