Juan Luis Zavaleta
Sacrileges & Blasphemies
OPENING RECEPTION
September 17, 2004, 7: 30 PM
ARTIST TALK
September 17, 2004, 8: 00 PM
Juan Zavaleta is a video, performance/
installation artist recognized in Mexico
for his participation with SEMEFO, a
well- known artists group who created
controversial work during the 1990s in
galleries and public spaces. SEMEFO,
which is an acronym for Forensic Medical
Service, a term they borrow from a state
agency that manages unclaimed bodies,
focused on classic themes like death,
violence, sex and pornography. SEMEFOs
installations exposed their concern about
corruption and poverty, and were a way to
protest against urban violence and political
neglect. Zavaleta now lives in Brandon and
has created a series of charcoal drawings
exposing his continued interest with
eroticism, religion and death. The AGSM
is happy to be offering Zavaleta one of his
first solo exhibitions in Canada.
This exhibition contains mature subject
matter Not recommended for those
under age 18.

David Garneau
Cowboys, Indians, (Métis?)
OPENING RECEPTION
November 4, 2004, 7: 30 PM
This exhibition explores representations of
settlers, First Nations and Métis people as
they have been played out in popular
media and visual arts. Through humour
and interesting juxtapositions, Garneau
ponders how Métis- ness is negotiated
between European and Aboriginal
identities/ histories. Exposed in his work are
the phases that one might go through
when exploring ones culture, for example
decoding, locating, searching for certainty,
acknowledgement, or maybe even proving.
David Garneau is an established artist,
writer and curator living and working in
Regina.
The AGSM hopes to hold a panel
on Metis identity in relation to art during
the course of this exhibition.
November 4 December 11, 2004
Riel Benn The Best Man
OPENING RECEPTION
November 4, 2004, 7: 30 PM
ARTIST TALK
November 4, 2004, 8: 00 PM
Through his alter ego, The Best Man,
Benn has created a series of paintings that
reflect his fascination with celibacy while
dealing with ignorance, loneliness and
jealousy at the same time. With a sly and
wry sense of humour, he turns the com-
plexities of relationships into jokes, games
and riddles, thus pleasing and satisfying
Benns need to justify and rationalize his
single state. Through the continuous
presence of the Best Man, clad in a purple
suit, blue heart, and top hat, Benn pre-
sents a narrative that makes us laugh, and
feel melancholic simultaneously.
Riel Benn is an established, award- winning artist
living and working in Birdtail Sioux, MB.

Message from the Director
|
|
|
Beautiful as our facilities are, it is what actually happens inside the AGSM that brings greater understanding of our community and enriches our everyday lives. Within the central measure of community relevance, artists chosen to
exhibit at the AGSM reflect in varying degrees artistic merit, general audience appeal and interest to the professional artist. Upcoming are several solo exhibitions by local artists who individually represent different aspects of the region. Juan Zavaleta, originally from Mexico where he was a recognized artist, is a new immigrant to Brandon. The AGSM is pleased to be able to launch his new career in Canada with an exhibition of drawings, Blasphemies and Sacrileges in September.
Riel Benn, a young Aboriginal painter from Birdtail Sioux, will exhibit his series of paintings entitled The Best Man in his first solo show in a public gallery in October. As complement to the Benn exhibit, Calgary artist David Garneaus exhibition, Cowboys, Indians and (Métis?) will investigate the artists recent discovery of his Métis heritage through painting and discussion. Award winning photographer and Carberry resident, Leona McIntyre will present an exhibition of photographs in the Community Gallery this fall.
Finally, Rob Lovatt, the AGSMs outstanding photography instructor, will finally have a well- deserved showing of his own expert work in photography. Yet serving the communitys artists and art lovers does not end with our exhibition program.
Our popular Art School offers a slate of courses in all aspects of the visual arts that bring to students the knowledge and expertise of the talented artist/ instructors in this region and beyond. As if thats not enough, we are extraordinarily pleased to offer a new Art Education program beginning this fall that will work closely with teachers and students in southwestern Manitoba.
Barb Flemington, who recently accepted the position of art educator, brings over 15 years of experience in teaching art within a public school context. An established artist in her own right, she is adept at finding linkages between art and learning. With so much to offer this community for all ages, cultures, tastes and levels of knowledge, I look forward to the many old and new faces I will see in the coming months.

From the Art Educator
|
 |
| Hello. Its great to be here! I have started my part time position as the Art Educator at the gallery and welcome friends and colleagues to come in for a visit. You will have ideas, concerns, suggestions and dreams to share with me. I feel heartened to have this opportunity to work in one of our citys most important art institutions. As advocates for the arts we can link and connect people and offer citizens an opportunity to reflect and realize their worth and potential. We can model diversity and help build a community with a generous spirit where people thrive.
The art education program focuses on the vitality of children and youth. The arts have become a cross- curricula endeavour that is helping to shape new ways of learning in all subject areas. Visual Arts is central to, and I would submit, one of the core curricula. Children and youth can take skills learned through the study of art into adulthood and apply them to any career and life path they choose.
ART Connects is the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitobas School Tour program which brings students into the art gallery where they will interact directly with original works of art. Guided tours of the exhibitions and studio activities in response to what they have seen and heard will form the backbone of the school tours program. I look forward to developing family projects, special art projects and cross- curricula models of learning with teachers and students as we grow the ART Connects program.
Our first ART Connects exhibition will be Cowboys, Indians, (Métis?) by painter, David Garneau which runs from Nov. 4 Dec 11, 2004 . Students will view the humourous and interesting juxtapositions in Garneaus work and then investigate the idea of identity with some paintings of their own. I welcome opportunities to meet with many individuals and organizations. If you run a daycare, home school, teach or facilitate programs within organizations, please call for tours and studio visits. Phone or E- mail your address to me and Ill be sure to get a brochure out to you. Looking forward to a year of learning
together.

Helen Lamont Memorial Watercolour Workshop
WITH WALTER J. PIEHL JR. |
 |
 |
| The AGSM is pleased to offer once again the Helen Lamont Watercolour Workshop. Helen Lamont was an adored and influential local artist and teacher who died in 1993. A memorial fund was set up in her name in 1994 that would allow the AGSM to bring to the region outside expertise in watercolour painting, a medium beloved by Lamont.
Starting October 29, North Dakota painter Walter Piehl, Jr, will conduct an intensive three day workshop that will emphasize his expressionistic approach to water media. Moving against the tradition of nostalgic and representational cowboy art, Walter Piehl work presents the rough and tumble world of rodeos, horses and cowboys with an expressionistic style reminiscent of Willem DeKooning or Jackson Pollock. Students enrolled in his workshop will be encouraged to mix water media with other materials like inks, colour and grease pencils in order to discover the creative potential of the expressionistic style.
Since 1970, Walter Piehl has been a professor of Art at Minot State University. He holds a Masters Degree of Fine Arts from the University of North Dakota and his work has been exhibited all over the United States. His paintings have been included in many collections including the Smithsonian Institution Center for Folk Life in Washington, DC, the Phillbrock Museum of Art and the Northwest Museum of Art in St. Paul, Minnesota. A major retrospective of his work was organized by the Plains Art Museum in Fargo, North Dakota in 2003. This past spring, an exhibition of his recent
paintings was shown at the Ucross Foundation Art Museum in Clearmont Wyoming.
For more information about Piehls upcoming workshop contact Allison at 727- 1036.
