Recent Work and Collaborations - James Prior

OPENING RECEPTION
Thursday April 21, 7: 30 PM
ARTIST TALK
Thursday April 21, 8: 00 PM

James Prior exposes the boundaries around notions of masculinity by depicting failed male stereotypes, through narratives around male-male bonds, examination of the role of the father, and the exclusion of the feminine.

Through photo-based series like James Pierre and Pom Pom: Two Hearts Beat As One, and James Johnstone Presents: The New 1001 Push-Up Man (a collaborative art project with Saskatoon-based artist Clark Ferguson), Prior creates a space of camaraderie and belonging for the characters while acknowledging their exclusion from larger societal structures. By presenting rarely seen stories of masculine identity, he asks viewers to acknowledge their own vulnerability, while considering alternative stories to manhood.

James Prior is an establishing artist living and working in Montreal.

ARTIST TALK
Thursday April 21, 8: 00 PM

This exhibition brings together two separate series of work by the artist, each addressing issues of crisis and language/text/communication.

The Future features an 11-year-old boy who divides himself between stories of pasts and futures, home and away, the realities of his present life and his imagined life in New York. Lou’s Eyes is a photo and text based installation that pays homage to a friend of the artist who suffers from a congenital eye disease, which will inevitably leave her completely blind. The work does not explore the particular of the disease, instead it is the rationale for positioning Lou as the subject of a project about two aspects of seeing – looking out and looking in.

Rachelle Viader Knowles is an established artist living and working in Regina.

The Study of Indian-ness
Jeff Thomas

OPENING RECEPTION
Thursday June 30, 7: 30 PM
ARTIST TALK
Thursday June 30, 8: 00 PM

This exhibition raises the question of  what is a "real" Indian. As both a photographer and curator, Thomas' interest is in how the dominant Canadian society has defined Indian-ness through photography, painting, movies, wild west shows, anthropology and museum displays. He is also concerned with how these areas of study infiltrate First Nations perspective. In a five-part installation, Thomas creates a site of testimony as a means of re-examining Indian representation, blending his own constructed and documentary photographs with historical and popular cultural images of Aboriginal people. Jeff Thomas is an established artist, writer and curator living and working in Ottawa. Organized and toured by Gallery 44.

Barry Ace at the opening of Super Phat Nish

Message from the Director
It’s been an exciting transition from winter to spring at the AGSM. In late January, long time Art School Coordinator Kevin Conlin broke his leg. The opening of two exhibitions in February, Godzilla vs Skateboarders and Super Phat Nish were enthusiastically greeted by a new youthful audience. And finally, March came roaring in with our 16th Annual Art Auction and Dinner.

The complicated fracture that Kevin sustained in a home accident has required careful convalescing. The staff has pulled together to cover off some of Kevin’s duties and the experience has made us appreciate even more the tireless contribution he makes to the gallery. We are looking forward to his return in late April.

Despite a decidedly stretched staff, we have managed to stay on course with a number of successful programming events, some more visible than others. Barb Flemington continued to bring in 3 school tours per week and coordinated an intensive one-day hands-on art experience for 55 students from Minnedosa. The opening of Super Phat Nish and Gozilla vs. Skateboarders attracted more than 300 people thanks to the enthusiasm of curator Cathy Mattes and our exhibition sponsor Senate Skate Shop. The DJ they provided for the event made the event memorable. Meanwhile, with the calm guidance of Allison Ryplanski and untiring support of Jimmy Scholz and Maggie Ross, the 16th Annual Art Auction, came off in the most amazing fashion attracting more than 300 people and grossing the gallery over $30,000 all for the Art Studio and Education program.

Yet, sometimes it is the efforts of those you don’t see everyday when you come in the gallery who are essential to getting the job done. The Art Auction committee led by Board Members Doug Wotton and Curt Shoultz attracted the amazing talent of Ken Frazer and Diane Nelson. All four, and particularly the last two, brought a unique spirit to the Art Auction that contributed to the specialness of the evening. Other Board members, Liz Roberts, Trudy Corbett, Michael Cox and Peter Spearey all lent their support on the day of the event. Extra special volunteers that we simply couldn’t have done it without included LeiAnne Sharratt, Mef Simpson, Wilma Lloyd Davies and Elaine Rounds.

The AGSM relies on over 85 volunteers per year to make our events and programs happen. There is nothing like losing (however temporarily) a full time staff person to highlight the importance of those volunteers. I can only say as often as possible, thank you, thank you, thank you!

From the Art Educator

I am heartened by the tremendous response to the ART connects School Tour Program this past 6 months. It is a joy to work with so many of our youth through the schools. The AGSM exhibitions curated by Cathy Mattes have truly hit the mark in reaching our younger population. I see young people from Kindergarten to Grade 12 and all of the students are fully engaged, offering wonderful insights about the artwork and life. They seem to really be enjoying their visits to the AGSM and eagerly share their ideas and skills in the hands-on component of the tours. They are positive and motivated, sophisticated in their knowledge and very art smart. Thanks to all of the teachers, principals, teachers aides and parents who have organized and been the supports for the tours. You are vital to the success of our programming and very much appreciated by us here at AGSM!

The upcoming exhibitions by artists, James Prior and Rachelle Viader Knowles are photo-based works. The discussion and activity developed for this tour will be about stereotypes and identity; belonging and community. Book early as the tours fill up quickly. Check our website for booking information at www.agsm.ca/education.html

The AGSM Community Gallery will exhibit the results from the Brandon School Division, Through the Eye of Art, ArtsSmarts Project from May 18 – 28, 2005.  Set those dates down on your calendars and bring friends and family to see the student creations from those who worked with Ilse Mohn, Elaine Rounds, Bob Christiani and Barb Flemington on various art projects.

Let’s keep the momentum going…together.

- Barb Flemington
