ARTIST TALK

Shirley Brown's recent work was inspired by bird skeletons she discovered in an abandoned cook stove. As they became a metaphorb for loss, she began to picture them as ancient beings that may have inhabited this Earth long ago.
Using the birds as a source of an imagined lost civilization, the artist has made "artifacts" like bookworks, reliquaries and shrines. These invented relics become symbolic fragments of a vanished world and lost wisdom. Playing with ideas of consumerism, Brown devotes a portion of the exhibition to a faux gift shop, which will contain tawdry mementos, commenting on museum exhibition and promotional practices. Shirley Brown is an established artist living and working in the Brandon region. Produced by the AGSM and the Winnipeg Art Gallery. A catalogue of the exhibition is available for $15.00 + GST.

The repetition of patterns both in natural and manufactured objects are a major source of inspiration for this Onanole based photographer. A repeated theme in her work is the complexity and simplicity of forms and the recognition that humankind cannot create something that does not already exist in nature.
Parent takes everyday objects, those found in natural settings and those that are not, and presents them in a manner that allows viewers to ponder the simple beauty that surrounds us. Denise Parent is an establishing artist living and working in Onanole, Manitoba.

| Prairie agriculture has endured a variety of changes throughout history but the closure of small grain elevators exposed difficult times for farmers. Once a place for business, the grain elevator also played the important role of community meeting place. Their disappearance from the Prairie landscape reflects the changes that have so negatively impacted on small farming communities.
In this exhibition, Brent Hume documents through photography how farming and the landscape have changed, and how it affects him as both an artist and farmer. Brent Hume is an establishing artist living and working in Saskatchewan.

October will feature an artist talk with Faye HeavyShield at AGSM.
|
|
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 27, 7:00 9:00 PM
Faye HeavyShield was born on the Stand Off Reserve in southern Alberta and is a member of the Blood Nation. She graduated from the Alberta College of Art in 1985 and continued her studies at the University of Calgary. Gaining prominence and recognition in the past few years, her work has been the subject of many solo shows, including major exhibitions of First Nations’ contemporary art. HeavyShield describes her art as a reflection of her environment and personal history as lived in the physical geography of southern Alberta with its prairie grass, river coulees, and wind and an upbringing in the Kainai community (with a childhood stint in the Catholic residential school system). The past, present and imagined make up the vocabulary used to realize her thoughts and ideas; responses and references to the body, land, and language.

The last few months have been a roller coaster of good news and sad. The AGSM’s School Art Tours program received a tremendous boost recently in the form of a generous donation from the Royal Bank of Canada Foundation. In this programs’ first year of operation, Staff Art Educator, Barb Flemington, has done a wonderful job of finding ways to make exhibitions in the main gallery a powerful education tool for children in the Brandon and rural school divisions. We are deeply grateful for the Royal Bank’s vote of support for this valuable program.
In the midst of this very good news, we were saddened to see the departure of curator Cathy Mattes. Her commitment, drive and excellent good humour have been profound assets to the AGSM in building a new and inclusive artistic vision. Despite her part time hours, Cathy did an enormous amount of work in the two years with the gallery. We are sad to see her go, but we know she will receive great joy by spending more time with her beautiful daughter Seren, while pursuing independent contracts including those with the AGSM. The Board of Directors and I are determined to maintain the vision of diversity she has begun. A new curator will be in place by late fall.
Cathy’s final official exhibition with the AGSM is by local artist Shirley Brown in a show entitled Vestiges and opening on August 25th. Co-produced with the Winnipeg Art Gallery where it already opened in early June, we are proud of this partnership forged by Cathy and the beautiful catalogue on Shirley’s work that has resulted. Thank you, Cathy!
