Message from the Director
Jennifer Woodbury
Much good news befell the gallery in the last 6 months. A nearly $21,000 dollar increase in our funding from the Manitoba Arts Council will allow us to hire a full time
curator. Arts Stabilization Manitoba, Inc awarded a Capital fund grant of $35,000 over 5 years for excellence in financial management, governance and program vision by. And, finally, but certainly not least, the City of Brandon has agreed to stabilize and reduce the difference between the rent we pay them and their funding support for the gallery. Such tremendous support will only strengthen our ability to provide quality visual arts education and exhibition programming to southwestern Manitoba.
Meanwhile our exhibition program this past summer and fall highlighted the work of our own homegrown artists. Shirley Brown’s Vestiges, which closed October 8 after a 6 week run in the Main Gallery attracted nearly 1600 visitors and numerous school groups. We were proud to show in our Community Gallery the work of new Brandon artists Jen Smith and Christopher Wood (until November 10th). Until November 30th, Denise Parent of Onanole displays her stunning photographs of lands far and near, Brent Hume’s (Saskatchewan) bittersweet photographs document the decline of the grain elevator, and finally, our very own AGSM Art School instructors present their considerable talents in an array of work from ceramics to painting.
As Christmas approaches, we have more in store for those in search of a unique gift or just a break from the hurly burly of shopping. The Gala of Gifts fundraiser, a tradition of sorts, will feature over 20 tables of unique and high quality crafts from December 2nd, 5:00 PM to 9:00 Pm and Saturday, December 3rd from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. But brand new for this year will be the First Annual Members Exhibition and Sale. Our amazing artist members will be displaying the work in the Main Gallery from December 8th to the 21st. Every piece will be for sale by the artist and will make a stunning gift. A small portion of each sale will be donated to the gallery.
So come on down to the gallery this season, with so much going on there’s bound to be something to please you.

OPENING RECEPTION THURSDAY, JANUARY12TH @ 7:30PM
ARTIST TALK THURSDAY, JANUARY 12TH, 8:00 PM
Leah Decter draws her work from the story of her grandfather who in 1914 narrowly escaped the destruction of his village and the death of his entire family. Subsequent years of repeated displacement in Eastern Europe ended when he made his way to Northern Saskatchewan with false papers. The artist’s personal relationship with the story combined with the broader issues it reflects is the touchstone for the work in “here”. Each piece in the exhibition uses a fundamental textile process to embody contemporary and historical aspects of issues like place, displacement and belonging.
Leah Decter has recently relocated to Winnipeg.

OPENING RECEPTION THURSDAY, JANUARY12TH @ 7:30PM
ARTIST TALK THURSDAY, JANUARY 12TH, 8:00 PM
Hannah Claus thinks of pattern as language, something that is omnipresent, surrounding and coding our lives, our selves and our worlds. In her installation work, the artist uses decoration to highlight relationships between cultural identities that make up her own history (Mohawk and Euro-Canadian), examining areas of overlap and transformation. To this end, she manipulates archetypal objects and/or patterns, such as colonial European wallpaper and textile patterns, Iroquois beading motifs and decorative design, as well as patterns that exist in nature.

From the Art Educator
Barb Flemington
The staff at AGSM is enjoying the help and company of Julie Martineau (Gatineau, Quebec) and Gayadhri Ambawattha (Galle, Sri Lanka), two Canada World Youth participants currently living and working in Brandon. They are working with the School Tours program and are an enormous asset. They are with us until November 24th when they set off for six months in Sri Lanka.
The ART Connects School Tours Program got off to a strong start with the exhibition, Vestiges by regional artist, Shirley Brown. This exhibition was popular with students and linked well with many areas of the curriculum. Vincent Massey Grade 11 English came for a visit and considered the exhibition in light of their study of short stories, A Bird in the House, by Margaret Lawrence. Here were two strong prairie women artists whose painting and writing narratives started from their place of living… Manitoba. We had many students visit the exhibition including a group of 40 Grade 11 students from Winnipeg.
Kid’s Studio Programs
I will be organizing the studio programs for children aged 6-12 years old. I welcome ideas and feedback. If you are interested in teaching please forward a resume to the Art Gallery Attention: Barb Flemington, Art Educator email: education@agsm.ca
