The AGSM is pleased to welcome the Tri-High Art Exhibition back for its fourth year at the gallery. This annual event showcases the creativity of local high school students from Crocus Plains High School, Neelin High School, and Vincent Massey High School. Tri-High gives Brandon’s next generation of artists a chance to display their work in a gallery setting and share their talents with the community.

Don’t miss out on the fun, come see Brandon’s young supernovas while they’re here! Produced in partnership with Crocus Plains High School, Neelin High School, and Vincent Massey High School.

THURSDAY, JULY 13 at 7PM

In Your Dreams realizes the fantastical feat of bringing together over 30 artists from across Australia, Germany, and Canada. The participating artists were assigned the task of creating new work on the subject of dreams, reverie, and the subliminal world. Restricted to a small traveling box, the pieces incorporate painting, printmaking, sculpture, collage, jewelry, and fi bre art.

Winnipeg-based artist Karen Cornelius will guest curate the Canadian component of the exhibition which includes pieces by Southwestern Manitoban artists Fay Jelly, Shirley Brown, Elaine Rounds, and Barb Flemington.

The Manitoba Summer Fair and the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba are pleased to present the artwork of Weiming Zhao at the Keystone Centre from June 7th-11th, 2006. In 2004, Zhao produced one scene of the city, once a day, for one year. The outcome has been over 500 sketches and paintings of the Brandon architectural landscape. Be sure to check out these incredible works of art in the UCT Pavilion at the 2006 Manitoba Summer Fair!

Message from the Director

New fundraiser a success! Lobsterama was probably the quietest fundraiser in the world, but it turned out to be one of the Art Gallery’s more successful money drives. It was a brand new idea and we didn’t want to be too fl ashy about it until we knew it would work. Well, it worked all right! We sold well over 150 lobsters and brought in nearly $7500. For $85 per couple, Sobey’s put together an elegant lobster dinner for two that you could eat in the comfort of your own home. It was a great low-key alternative to our Annual Art Auction that will return in March 2007 with a new rejuvenated format.

Meanwhile, Montreal artist Karen Tam’s recreation of a Chinese restaurant right in the Main Gallery attracted a lot of attention from gallery goers as well as the local and national media. Tam spent 5 weeks in Brandon creating her installation connecting to the community and doing workshops about cultural stereotypes and racism with local school children. She made a lot of friends in Brandon and we shall miss her.

Coming up we have our annual Tri High Art Exhibition featuring the best and brightest art stars from Neelin, Crocus and Vincent Massey High Schools. The Palette Club will have their Annual Exhibition in the Community Gallery in early June.

In July and August come out and see the work of local artists Barb Flemington, Shirley Brown, Fay Jelly and Elaine Rounds in the International group exhibition featuring thirty artists from Canada, Australia and Germany. And finally, August we will celebrate the work of Pearl Nikkel in our Community Gallery. There are plenty of reasons to visit the gallery this summer and I hope to see you all.

The AGSM would like to thank the following people for their help in making Karen Tam’s No MSG at Friendship Dinner (Nor Cats) a great success:

Tracy Danielson, Bill and Sue-On Hillman, Daniel Lim Wong and family, Hant Choy, Sergio Lee (Kam Lung Restaurant), Melanie Martin, Michael Cox, Keith Edmunds (Pennywise Books), Tony and Chris Reid, Derek Woychyshyn (Komfort Kitchen), Tom Mitchell (Archives, Brandon University), Ken Jackson (B.J.
