DRAWING FUNDAMENTALS AND COLOURED PENCIL
WITH GERRY OLIVER
Develop your basic drawing skills and understand line, positive and negative space, perspective, light and shadow as well as proportion. Build confidence in your drawings skills and explore the use of coloured pencil in your drawings. Open to beginners or those with past drawing experience.

JUST DRAWING WITH COLOURED PENCIL

Open to beginners or those with drawing experience. Gerry will help you develop your drawing skills and creativity. In a variety of new exercises and projects Gerry will show you how to use a traditional drawing medium - the pencil crayon - to create “paintings,” exploring light, shadow and colour.

DRAWING AND WATERCOLOUR
WITH BECKY CHINN
Inspired by her recent workshop with watercolourist Alvaro Castagnet from Uruguay, Becky’s class will incorporate experimenting more with large brushstrokes and a simplified focal point while learning basic techniques for sketching and paint application. Open to both introductory and advanced students, this class will help develop drawing, sketching, and watercolour skills while exploring creativity.

INTRODUCTION TO PAINTING

INTRODUCTION TO FRESCO AND SECCO
WITH NEIL STOUFFER
Learn the age-old process and history of the ancient art of Fresco, painting on a thin layer of wet plaster; and Secco, painting over the fresco with egg tempera. Neil will show beginners how to use traditional techniques to create unique and personal expressions.

INTRODUCTION TO WORKING ON THE POTTER’S WHEEL
WITH KEVIN CONLIN
Have you always wanted to create on the potter’s wheel? Learn step by step how to wedge clay, centre, raise a cylinder, make bowls, turn/tool a simple foot, glaze and decorate your work. Students will also learn about basic kiln operations.

Students experienced with clay basics and throwing on the potter’s wheel will focus on form as you learn to create bowls, plates, mugs and vases. Experiment more with glazing and build your knowledge of proper kiln procedures for loading and firing electric kilns.

INTRODUCTION TO BLACK AND WHITE DARKROOM PHOTOGRAPHY

MENTORSHIP IN BLACK AND WHITE DARKROOM PHOTOGRAPHY FOR BEGINNER OR ADVANCED STUDENTS 
Receive 24 hours of one-0n-one instruction. This will be a combination of field and darkroom instruction.  A session schedule will be planned between the instructor and the student, sessions can be as short as one hour or a full day and the program can run as long as 8 weeks. Students will have the same access to the studio as other AGSM students. Your own 35mm camera is required.

INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING CHINESE CHARACTERS, MANDARIN GRAMMAR, CHINESE CULTURE AND PHILOSOPHY

This class is a fun and easy way for children to begin to learn the basic, introductory steps of learning Chinese characters.  Sharon will use art activities and games to teach children how to draw and understand line. Discover how Chinese characters evolved from drawing nature, people, etc. Learn basic Mandarin grammar, and develop and understanding and appreciation for Chinese culture and philosophy.

First: get your spin on with Hoola Hoop Enthusiast Shanti Subedar! Shanti will show you how to make and decorate your very own Hoola Hoop with everyday materials. Learn all sorts of Hoola Hoop tricks and moves and you will be Hooping in no time. Then, create amazing drawings of people and movement while you learn to draw action poses!

GROOVE AND PAINT
Learn to make drawings and paintings of people in motion as you are introduced to Yoga and Capoeira. This class will use music and movement to help you find inspiration for your paintings. Shanti Subedar and Blake Hamilton will help you focus as they lead you in a Yoga for Kids session. You will get your feet movin’ and your body groovin’ as you learn about the exciting world of Capoeira - a Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, dance, and music. Create one of a kind paintings of the people in motion using expressive brushstrokes, colour and balance.

Experiment with inks and rollers, learn to use everyday materials and basic tools to create images and turn them into prints. Work with the printing press, but also techniques to create prints without a press at home.

TRY YOUR HAND AT CLAY FOR A DAY
WITH ELEANOR BEEVER

Ceramic artist and teacher Eleanor Beever will show you how to design and create a sculpted three-dimensional clay tile, or you can do more than one to complete a small wall mural. Learn about the history of tile-making and tile uses. Discover the joys of working with clay, a soft and versatile material. Students will receive a tour of the AGSM’s clay studio, the only one of its kind in Southwestern Manitoba. Eleanor will also demonstrate the potter’s wheel so students can experience wheel thrown forms.

Pinhole Camera

Photography at its most basic! The pinhole camera is a lightproof box with a small hole on one side – that’s it. In this one-day, hands on workshop, we will use pinhole cameras to capture images on film and photo paper, process them in the black & white darkroom and then discuss our results.

PHOTPGRAPHING YOUR ARTWORK
WITH KEVIN BERTRAM

Having trouble taking good photographs of your artwork? In this one-day workshop, Kevin will teach you the basics for taking excellent documentation of your artwork. Bring your digital camera, tripod (if you have one), and a couple of pieces of your art to the workshop. We will go over some basic camera functions and lighting techniques for both two and three dimensional pieces that will give you the most out of your equipment and some satisfying results!

FIBRE AND FABRIC WEEKEND:

FELTING
WITH GERRY OLIVER

Gerry will lead a workshop in wet-felting using sheep wool fibre.  Students will be shown a variety of ways to work with this versatile material which can be shaped into different forms – three-dimensional sculptures, utilitarian objects such as hand-bags, or two-dimensional wall hangings. Students will learn the basic methods used to felt the fibre as they make a unique hand-bag or pillow cover.

NEEDLEFELTING
WITH DIANA NEUMAN
Diana will introduce you to needlefelting sheep wool fibre and show you some of the different possibilities for this medium. Receive a brief introduction of where the fleece comes from, processing and dyeing the fleece, and how the fibre can be needlefelted to create 2D or 3D pieces. Students will be shown a step by step project which will help them learn the first essential steps, which needles to use and when, and a variety of shaping, attaching and needle techniques. Students can then use these methods to create their own unique work of art.

DESIGN-PAINT-QUILT
WITH HEATHER LAIR
Try stepping away from commercial fabric to design your own fabric to use in art quilts. Learn Heather’s method of painting cloth, developing a design, fusing, cutting, stitching, painting some more and then stitching some more! Heather will provide patterns of sample quilts and a page of shapes available to get started.
Open to all levels – sewing machine experience required.

Learn and practice the fundamentals of drawing in this sketching class. Plein air (outdoor) drawing can be a little bit tricky in February or March but we have a solution for you! In this fun winter workshop work alongside artist Becky Chinn who will provide basic drawing lessons and guide you to a variety of indoor sketching locations in Brandon. Becky will help you develop your skills drawing people, architecture, or even the steaming cup of coffee in front of you!
