Artist Talk with Alison Norlen

Wednesday, February 24, 2010
7:30pm - 8:30pm

Brandon University Department of Visual and Aboriginal Art and the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba present a public talk by Alison Norlen at the Glen P. Sutherland Gallery of Art, Brandon University.

The large-scale wall drawings of Alison Norlen are literally spectacular in terms of both subject matter and material application. The dramatic visual language found in her epic visual depictions of urban sprawl is intended to overwhelm the viewer, drawing them into a cinematic experience of pleasure, fantasy, and times, disorientation. The skilled craftsmanship and striking visual presence of her recent large-scale architecturally focused work affirms drawing’s status as a viable medium unto itself. She is currently Associate Professor of Painting and Drawing at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon.

art days night 2009

The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba’s 19th Annual Art Auction, An Art Day’s Night is postponed to Friday, April 24th at 7 PM.

“Ticket sales were slow”, says Board chair, Mike Malazdrewicz. “People are choosing deeply discounted winter vacations over a cold winter night out in support of the Art Gallery and who can blame them?”

Art Auction Committee member Curt Shoultz notes, “Timing is everything! Just by changing the date to April 24 we’ve already increased ticket sales and gained a sponsorship from Investors Group.”

Event supporters, Remington’s, Prairie Lane Auction and over 25 local artists, remain on board for the new date. It will be fast, fun, different, and delicious. Weather willing, no one will need to check their coat! Call Allison at 727-1036 for tickets.

The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba Presents

Draw-a-thon!

October 26, 2007, 9PM – 9AM

What better way to enjoy the talent of local Southwestern Manitoba comic artists then to view or even participate in a draw-a-thon? The Draw-a-thon will commence at 9PM on October 26th and conclude at 9AM on October 27th, 2007. This event, organized by local artist Curt Shoultz, will coincide with the opening celebration of three exhibitions: “Comicshow: Drawn to Story,” “Japanada: A Cross-Cultural Curatorial Exchange, Part One: Taiyo Kimura,” and “The Spirit of Energy” (in the Community Gallery).

What is Draw-a-thon? Draw-a-thon is basically a drawing jam, or in this case a comic jam, where artists will get together to create either individual or group works. This event not only allows artists to meet, greet and work together but it also grants viewers the opportunity to see how comic art is created. This event is in a very similar vain to 24 Hour Comics Day, an international day of comic creation that challenges artists to create a 24 page comic story in 24 hours. Just like 24 Hour Comics Day our goal with our Draw-a-thon is to get people to work together side by side in the spirit of camaraderie while informing the public about contemporary comic art practices.

With our Draw-a-thon artists will be collecting pledges from the community. These pledges will be donated to the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba and any charitable donation over $20.00 will receive a tax receipt from the gallery. The person who submits the highest pledge to any individual artist will have the opportunity to select a work, of his/her choice, created during the draw-a-thon. Drinks and snacks will be supplied to participating artists during the event. Participants need not complete all twelve hours of the draw-a-thon but can partake for any period of time that suits them.

Interested in joining in on the fun or have any questions? Just contact Amber Andersen, Curator at Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba at 204-727-1036.

The AGSM in collaboration with MAWA (Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art) hosted Vancouver-based artist Rebecca Belmore for a presentation on October 23, 2004 @ 2:00 PM at the AGSM.

Belmore’s work addresses history, place, and identity through sculpture, installation, video and performance. Belmore has produced installations and performances internationally since 1987, in locations such as Havana, Cuba, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Sydney, Australia. Belmore is Canada’s official representative at the 2005 Venice Biennale of Visual Art, the world’s oldest and most prestigious venue for the international display of contemporary art.

Rebecca Belmore will be a MAWA Mentor In Residence this Fall. This intensive program is designed to meet the needs of mid-career and senior artists through studio visits, weekly meetings, and various other forms of professional development.

In collaboration with MAWA (Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art), AGSM hosted a presentation by Montreal based artist Mindy Yan Miller on Saturday July 10, 2004 at 2:00 PM.

Sometimes honorific and sometimes blasphemous, the work of Mindy Yan Miller often invokes analytic relationships between craft and mechanical production, labour and consumption, and ownership and representation. The presence (or absence) of the body is evident in much of her work, often symbolized through the use of found objects that hint at the memory of former owners.

Mindy Yan Miller studied surface design and art at Parson’s School of Design (N.Y.C.) and the Nova Scotia School of Art & Design (Halifax). Exhibited in North America and Europe since the mid 1980s, Mindy Yan Miller’s work has recently been featured at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery (Lethbridge), Galerie La Centrale (Montreal), Mercer Union (Toronto), Musée Marcil (Saint-Lambert, Québec) and Artforum (Berlin, Germany). An active member of galerie articule (Montreal), her curatorial activities include Pied-a-terre (1993), Ruth Liberman & Allan Switzer (1994), and Hôpital (2001). Presently Mindy Yan Miller teaches in Fibres at Concordia University and is the mother of a beautiful and willful little boy.

Mindy Yan Miller is presently a Mentor In Residence with MAWA (Mentoring Artists For Women’s Art). This intensive program is designed to meet the needs of mid-career and senior artists, through studio visits, weekly meetings, and various other forms of professional development.
