with Cecilia Araneda

Funding programs through federal and provincial arts councils and government agencies support a wide range of media art projects, including experimental films/videos, media installations, digital art, documentaries, narrative films, and interactive forms, among others.

Sustaining a career as an artist requires learning what funding resources are available, as well as the ability to write clear, concise, relevant and persuasive grant applications.

This workshop will provide an overview of the different funding sources available for Manitoba media artists, including the different values nuances of each. It will also provide an overview of the standard documents and support materials required by each funder.

Attention will be provided to grant programs offered by the Canada Council for the Arts (including the Canada Council’s Creating, Knowing and Sharing department programs, which are targeted to self-identified Indigenous artists and aspiring artists), the Manitoba Arts Council, and the Winnipeg Film Group.

This workshop is focused on funding opportunities in the media arts, but will include information relevant to the visual arts as well.

This workshop does not cover grant writing for commercial industry funders such as Telefilm Canada, Canadian Media Fund (CMF), Manitoba Film and Music (MFM), or the Independent Production Fund (IPF).

NOTE: This program is part of a new pilot project at the AGSM in the media arts.

INSTRUCTOR: Manitoba writer/director Cecilia Araneda holds an MFA in screenplay writing from the University of British Columbia. She has worked professionally as a writer on television and short film projects, and is currently developing her first dramatic feature film, Intersection. Her film work has been funded by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Manitoba Arts Council, Manitoba Film + Music, and the NFB, among others.
