The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba is pleased to announce the appointment of Alyssa Fearon as the gallery’s Curator.

“We are thrilled to be welcoming Alyssa to the AGSM and to the community here in Brandon. Alyssa is at the forefront of an emerging trend in artistic institutions to bring an increased depth of engagement and collaboration with their communities,” said John Hampton, Executive Director of the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba. “Alyssa brings an impressive skill-set and passion to the gallery, that I am confident will build on our momentum and help make the goals set out in our Strategic Plan a reality. She has a nuanced and insightful understanding of artistic practices and trends, a strong business acumen, and a kind and open demeanor, and I am very excited to see her next steps.

Currently the Curator of Nuit Blanche Toronto’s inaugural Scarborough zone, Alyssa Fearon is dedicated to working from a collaborative framework to expand the ways in which communities engage with contemporary art. Integral to Fearon’s curatorial practice is a community-based approach that prioritizes voices from diverse and historically underrepresented audiences.

Fearon has held positions at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Independent Curators International, and the City of Toronto. She has also been involved in advisory boards for social enterprises and artist run centres, including SKETCH for the Working Arts and Mercer Union.

Alyssa Fearon holds an MBA from the Schulich School of Business and an MA in art history from York University. She is also a Young Cultural Innovators Salzburg Fellow (2018).

"I'm excited and honoured to be joining the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba. The AGSM has been doing radical and innovative work in terms of building and strengthening relationships with Indigenous and diverse peoples across southwestern Manitoba and I'm thankful for the opportunity to build upon this foundation.

I'm also excited to collaborate with the team at the AGSM to develop rigorous exhibitions and programming that excite and engage communities across Brandon, the Prairies, Canada, and internationally. My intention is to do work that honours the unique history of this land, its ancestors and future generations to come."

Fearon will be welcomed to the community on November 8th at the opening reception for the AGSM’s 14th annual Members’ Show.
