Possible Forms or Actions is an installation of embossed drawings and cut vinyl patterns that focuses on the role of pattern and design systems in lending order to experience. Natasha Mazurka’s work draws attention to ways in which the patterned languages we employ are alive and regenerative, as is our awareness and response to the external world. In a series of drawings titled index, patterns are pulled from fields of natural science, ornament, and craft, technology, and bio-informatics. Each design plays with the recombination of essential graphic elements - lines, curves, dots, circles - relied on within these fields. While the series as a whole creates connections amongst disciplines, single works elude specificity. Meanwhile, Mazurka's cut vinyl patterns and paintings reference how the syntax we employ to structure our environments is a reflection of our thoughts, desires, and anxieties. Using historical and contemporary design systems, these works bring into focus the opposing, and sometimes contradictory, aesthetic approaches used to relate to the world around us.
